Memories by Austin Ojo
I grew up in a village. Life was difficult. Food was short. We ate one meal a day if we were lucky. We travelled for miles to get water and we had to carry it home. This was a heavy burden for a boy at ten years of age.
On my way home one day I bumped my head and the water emptied out of the bucket. When I got home, I was in big trouble. My parents punished me and sent me out again to get more water. Things were tough. I do not like to think about those times any more.
When I was fifteen, I went to work in the city with my older brother. I worked in a factory making plastic bottles. Life was good then. I had money and I was independent, but most of my money went on rent.
The rest of my family still lived in the country. I visited them from time to time. The pace of life was very slow.
Things are different in Dublin. I am busy bringing my children to school, and going to work and college. I have a lovely family and a nice house.
