The Day I Won the Grand National by Willie O’Brien
I met Shannon in McDonalds on Saturday in Swords for breakfast. Shannon was having her eyes tested so I went into Paddy Power’s to put a bet on a horse in the English Grand National, which was held on the 6th of April this year. The horse I backed was ‘Tiger Roll’ and the odds were 9 to 1. I put a fiver on it each way and then went home to watch the race on the TV on my own.
I was excited as the horse started to look as though it could win, I was jumping and screaming at the same time urging it along and shouted the house down when it won. It was a great feeling to win and I went immediately to the bookies to collect my winnings, fifty-six euro I got, it felt like a million. I rang me Da and told him that I won; he was in the pub watching it. He was messing with me sisters when he told them I won a thousand euro and we all had a great laugh. I got me Da a pint for luck.
I put the rest away as myself and Shannon are going away in May for a weekend. I still get a great laugh when I think about my ‘big’win.
